![]() ![]() I loved the idea of a mystery wrapped up in a psychological study, so when the psychological study component very quickly disintegrates in favor of a whole lot of man-obsession, it was a let-down at first. I was a little disappointed, then, when I quickly realized this book goes straight back into the same territory about a quarter of the way in. Without giving anything away, if you read Hendrick and Pekkanen’s previous book, you’ll know it was about a woman obsessing over a man. To be honest, it felt a little like a bait-and-switch. The book’s blurb indicates that it explores the “line between what is real” and what’s part of the test, but that’s…not actually what the book is about.Īpart from a minor instance, it’s pretty clear throughout the book what’s part of the test. ![]() ![]() I was intrigued initially by the premise, but the story turned out to be quite different than described. Anna promised her parents that the “deadaversary” would be a turning point, but only because they have threatened to send her to a summer camp for troubled teens if she doesn’t start trying to act more normal. But Anna hasn’t told anyone about how Joe’s death is really her fault, so she has to go on coping as best she knows how by emulating 70s punk rocker Patti Smith, and doing nineteen minutes of “coffin yoga” every morning, one minute for every year of Joe’s life. It’s been one year since Joe’s death, and everyone, from her therapist, to her parents, thinks she should be getting over it by now. How maybe there are more ways to grieve than the stupid fives steps outlined in their colorful pamphlets.”Īnna, once an aspiring writer, lost her words the day her uncle died. Thus far, it looks like Russia is winning, though maybe “lesser loser” would be a better way of describing Russia’s position, which has also been terribly damaged by the war. Also, because the devastation in Ukraine has been so much greater than it has been in Russia, and because this will be economically costly to Ukraine and/or those countries that will pay to have it rebuilt, the war looks like it will be even more costly to NATO countries, so that also will be relative win for Russia. Here’s an excerpt from the article:Īs far as the changing world order due to the great powers conflict, there are three things that I (and some important government leaders) expect to learn by watching how the conflict in Ukraine is going.
